December 20th, 2011

“Who’s excited for her very first Christmas? I bet Sofia is. Yes she is,” Arizona cooed in the silliest baby voice she could produce. She was changing her daughter’s diaper and getting ready to enjoy a day off with the little one. In the other room she heard a sharp knock followed by the sound of the front door opening.

“Torres! You in here?”

“She’s at work right now. And you’re lucky Sofia wasn’t asleep. What do you need?” Arizona responded carrying Sofia into the living room to greet Mark.

“Oh damn. I was going to ask her what I should get you for Christmas.” Mark took Sofia from Arizona’s arms and smiled as she held on to his ear. His smile faded when he saw the stern look on Arizona’s face.

“Okay, one: watch your language around her. And two: I thought we agreed not to get gifts for each other.”

“Noooo, you agreed not to get a gift for me. I have always planned on getting you a gift. I just have no idea what. Also, she isn’t even a year old yet. She has no idea what I’m saying.”

Arizona sighed. “Fine. I guess I can get you something, too. Although it is awfully last minute...”

“You already got me something didn’t you?”

She feigned offense for a second before giving up. “Yeah. I wasn’t going to, but then I saw something that I thought was perfect for you.”

“Aww, that’s so sweet,” Mark replied.

“Yeah, I know.” Arizona smiled then quickly became confused. “Wait a minute. If you didn’t know that I’d gotten you a gift, why were you planning to get me one? Were you just going to let me sit there like a dumbass on Sunday?”

“Uhh...no?” Mark lied and Arizona playfully smacked his arm. “And I thought we were supposed to watch our language?”

“Liar. And that’s beside the point. You are such a jerk.” Arizona was trying so hard not to smile.

“Yeah, but you love me for it.” Mark grinned and turned his attention to Sofia. “Do you see the way that she abuses Daddy? She beats me and calls me names. Your Momma does it too. And Lexie. You’re the only woman in my life that truly loves me.”

Arizona just rolled her eyes and walked into the kitchen. “Are you off today?”

“Nah, but I don’t have to be in until two.” Mark followed her as he spoke and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.

Arizona took the bottle from his hand and started drinking from it herself. “Oh okay. Do you want to take her for a little while before you go in?”

“Are you sure? I’d love to, but I know it’s not my day to keep her.” Mark was not about to pass up the opportunity to spend more time with his daughter.

“Not at all. Go have fun; I’ll see you later.” Arizona let them out and went into the bedroom to finish up some laundry.

Callie was sitting at the nurse’s station filling out charts when Lexie sat down next to her and sighed. “I have no idea what to get Mark.”

“Umm...I don’t know what to tell you. Get him a bottle of his favorite liquor?” Callie said without looking up from her charts.

“I don’t know. Is that really something a girlfriend would give her boyfriend for Christmas? We’ve had kind of a rough year.”

Callie set down her pen and thought for a moment. “I think it’s kind of perfect. You’ve had a rough year, so you give him his favorite liquor. He can get smashed and completely forget it all.” She smirked and went back to writing.

“That is so not funny,” Lexie replied even though she was laughing. Sighing again she stood up to leave. “I’ll figure something out. What time are we getting together Sunday?”

Callie glanced up at Lexie. “We haven’t really discussed it, but I figured late afternoon. We can exchange gifts and then get ready to go to dinner at Derek and Meredith’s. Sofia will have no clue what’s going on, so there’s no point in getting up early.”

“Sounds good to me. I’ll see you later,” Lexie said with a nod and then walked off to check on a patient.

Callie groaned as she hit the alarm clock to make it shut up. She could have sworn that she turned that thing off last night. Burrowing further under the covers she opened one eye and saw that Arizona was wide awake. “Whyyy are you up already?”

Arizona didn’t bother to hide the shock on her face. “Because it’s Christmas!”

“Oh my God you have got to be kidding me,” Callie replied rolling her eyes. “It’s eight in the morning. Mark and Lexie won’t be here until this afternoon. Go back to sleep.”

“No. We have to make banana pancakes. It’s tradition. You know this. Now get your cute butt up and get Sofia. I’ll meet you in the kitchen.” Arizona gave Callie a quick kiss, then got up to get started on the pancakes.

“My wife is insane,” Callie muttered to herself before climbing out of bed to go wake up her daughter.

“Knock, knock. We’re here!” Mark called as he followed Lexie into Callie and Arizona’s apartment.

“Make yourselves comfortable, we’ll be right out!” Callie replied from their bedroom where she was changing Sofia’s diaper. She turned toward the open bathroom door where Arizona was getting ready. “Babe, they’re here. Are you almost finished?”

“Yep.” Arizona walked out and gave Callie a quick kiss before walking out to greet Mark and Lexie. “Hey guys! How was your morning?”

Lexie smiled and gave Arizona a hug. “It was great. Mark gave me a pair of ruby earrings.” She pulled her hair back to show off her new jewelry. “Yours?”

“Oh wow, those are gorgeous. It was nice. We made banana pancakes and opened presents. Callie got me this beautiful sapphire ring and I got her an emerald bracelet. What did you get for Mark?”

“A bottle of the finest whiskey available. Johnnie Walker Blue Label,” Mark replied with a smile.

“Wow, that’s awesome. We’ll have to open that later.”

“Look who’s here! It’s Daddy and Lexie!” Callie brought Sofia into the living room and handed her to Lexie.

Lexie smiled at the little girl. “Hi, Sofia. Are you having a good first Christmas?”

“Would you look at me? I’ve got all my favorite girls in one room together,” Mark said. Callie, Arizona, and Lexie just rolled their eyes.

“How about we exchange gifts? Then we can head over to Derek and Meredith’s,” Callie suggested as she grabbed the gifts from under the tree. She handed Mark a relatively small gift and set a much larger one in front of Lexie. “Alright, Mark, here’s yours and Lexie yours is pretty heavy so be careful. I’ll take Sofia while you open them. Oh, and they kind of go together.”

Mark and Lexie shared a look before unwrapping their presents. Callie and Arizona had gotten Mark a cookbook by Michael Symon and a ten piece cookware set for Lexie. The two started laughing and Lexie got up to give Callie and Arizona their gifts, while Mark took Sofia. As the women opened their gifts, they began laughing as well. Mark and Lexie had gotten a pasta maker for Callie and an Italian cookbook for Arizona.

“Okay, that is just too weird,” Arizona said. “How did we basically get the same things for each other?”

Mark laughed again. “I think it’s awesome. We need to make these recipes starting tomorrow.”

“I like that idea. I can practice making pasta on all of you. Are we ready to go?” Callie asked glancing at her watch. “I think we’re running a little late.”

Arizona got up to put Sofia in her carrier, while Lexie went to grab the diaper bag and Mark ran his and Lexie’s presents across the hall. They were all looking forward to a fun night with their friends and colleagues.
